Advancing Unit-Level and Institutional Goals

Chairs face an interesting balancing act in setting the strategic future direction of a department while remaining in alignment with the goals of the school or college and the broader institution. What elements contribute to a departmental strategic plan with effective goals? How does a chair advocate for departmental needs while remaining cognizant of the broader needs at the school and institutional level? Charting an appropriate course requires integrity and ethics as well as an ability to manage change and lead others through it. Moving forward also requires a firm understanding of what the department has accomplished in the past and what resources in data and services are available or could be cultivated to assist you in leading it forward. Finally, your commitment to the ongoing development of the department requires building leadership capacity in the faculty to ensure successful leadership transitions in the future.
